Getting the most out of these Twin Cities landmarks

The places listed above span both downtowns, the riverfront and the lakes, so it helps to group them by area. A visit is easier when you plan around neighbourhoods rather than trying to cross the metro several times in one day.

The Minneapolis riverfront

Mill City Museum and the Guthrie Theater stand almost side by side near the Mississippi. The museum is built into the ruins of a former flour mill and tells the story of how milling shaped the city. The Guthrie's cantilevered Endless Bridge gives a good view of the river and the Stone Arch Bridge, and you can see it even if you are not going to a performance. Walking the Stone Arch Bridge and the paths around St. Anthony Falls fits naturally into the same outing. The University of Minnesota's East Bank campus is a short trip across the river.

Art, lakes and markets

The Walker Art Center sits beside the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, home of the well-known Spoonbridge and Cherry. From there it is a reasonable bike ride or bus trip to the Chain of Lakes, where trails circle Bde Maka Ska and its neighbouring lakes. The Minneapolis Farmers Market, north of downtown, is busiest in the growing season. Check its current days and hours before you go.

St. Paul and Fort Snelling

The Minnesota State Capitol, designed by Cass Gilbert, is the seat of state government and the most relevant stop for anyone following state politics. Public tours are often available, and when the Legislature is in session you may be able to watch proceedings from the galleries. Historic Fort Snelling stands where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet, a place of deep significance to the Dakota people. Its exhibits cover that history alongside the fort's military past.
