Before You Give: What Donors in Minnesota Should Know

Giving to a political campaign is one of the most direct ways to take part in an election, and a little preparation makes the process smoother for you and for the people who handle the paperwork. Campaign finance rules exist so that voters can see who is funding a race, which is why you will usually be asked for more than a card number when you contribute.

Information you may be asked to provide

Campaigns in Minnesota generally record details about their contributors so they can meet state reporting requirements. Be ready to share:

  • Your full name and home address
  • Your employer and occupation, which are commonly requested for larger contributions
  • Confirmation that the money is your own and not given on behalf of someone else

Contributions above certain thresholds may appear in public filings with the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board. If privacy matters to you, it is worth reading the current disclosure rules before you give.

Tips for giving wisely

  • Keep your own records. Save receipts or confirmation emails so you can track how much you have given during the election cycle and stay within the individual limit.
  • Check tax treatment. Political contributions are generally not deductible as charitable gifts. Minnesota has at times offered a political contribution refund programme, but its availability has changed over the years, so confirm current rules or ask a tax professional.
  • Watch for imitations. Only give through links you trust, and be cautious about unsolicited messages asking for money in a candidate's name.

Support that isn't financial

Money helps, but campaigns run on people. If a donation isn't right for you at the moment, you can still make a real difference by knocking on doors, making calls or helping at community gatherings. See the volunteer page for ways to get involved, or browse upcoming events to meet other supporters. Questions about contributions can be sent through the contact page.
