What to Expect on Your First Volunteer Shift

If you have never volunteered on a campaign before, the first shift can feel like a leap. It does not need to. Most volunteer work comes down to a few simple habits: showing up prepared, listening more than you talk, and keeping careful notes so the team knows what you heard.

Before you arrive

  • Dress for Minnesota weather. Canvassing happens in every season, so layers, waterproof shoes and gloves make a long walk far more comfortable. In summer, bring water and sunscreen.
  • Charge your phone. Many canvassing and phone banking tools run on smartphones, and a dead battery can end a shift early.
  • Read the platform. You do not need to memorise policy, but skimming the platform page helps you answer common questions honestly and point people to more detail.

At the door or on the phone

A good conversation is short and respectful. Introduce yourself, say which campaign you are with, and ask an open question about what matters to the person you are speaking with. If someone is not interested, thank them and move on. If you do not know an answer, say so and offer to have the campaign follow up rather than guessing.

Always follow the guidance your shift lead gives you, including rules about where you can leave literature. Placing materials inside mailboxes, for example, is not permitted under federal postal rules, so use doors or handles instead.

After the shift

Record your results promptly and accurately. Notes such as "wants a yard sign" or "asked about transit" help the field team plan the next round of outreach. Then tell your lead how the shift went: what worked, which streets were hard to reach, and whether you would like to try a different role next time.

Other ways to help

Not everyone can walk a neighbourhood for hours. Volunteers also help with data entry, greeting guests at campaign events, driving fellow volunteers and hosting small house meetings. If you have a skill you think could be useful, or need an accessible role, reach out through the contact page and let the team find a good fit.
